Azhan was not legislated in the Makkan period of the prophethood. It was legislated in the first year after the Hijrah. When the community of the believers started to grow in Madeenah, the companions raised the concern regarding how they can gather everyone for the prayers. Some suggested the use of the bell (Naaqoos) Others mentioned the horn (Booq) and some others said that the fire (Naar) should be lit to signal the time of congregational prayers. It was known that the Christians used the bell, the Jews used the Shofar or the ram’s horn and the Majoos used the fire, so the prophet was hesitant to entertain these ideas in order to avoid resemblance to the disbelievers. And the people had almost decided to use the bell, but the night prior to that, one of the companions by the name of Abdullah Ibn Zayd saw a dream. He saw a man wearing green garments and holding a bell. So Abdullah said to him, could you sell the bell to me? So the man said, and what will you do with it? Abdullah answered by saying, we will use it to notify the people about the prayers. Upon that the man said, should I not lead you to something that is better than that? Then, the man taught him the words of the Azhan. The next morning, Abdullah went to the prophet and mentioned the dream. The prophet was rejoiced and said, it is no doubt a true dream. Go and teach these words to Bilal because he has a stronger and more melodious voice. So he went to Bilal and taught him the words, upon which Bilal began to call the Azhan loudly. Hearing that, Umar came out of his house, hurrying toward the prophet while dragging his garment. Upon seeing the prophet, he said, I swear by the One Who sent you with the truth, I heard the same words in my dream. The prophet said, all praise is for Allah. When the Jews of Madeenah heard the Azhan, they came to the prophet and said, O Muhammad, what have you invented? We have never heard of anything like this before. They mocked him and the Azhan, so Allah revealed:وَإِذَا نَادَيْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱتَّخَذُوهَا هُزُوًا وَلَعِبًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَعْقِلُونَAnd when you call to prayer, they take it in ridicule andamusement. Virtues of AzhanThe prophet said:If the people knew the reward in saying the Azhan and joining in the first Saff, and they found no way to attain these opportunities except to by casting lots, then they would even do thatThe prophet said:The people who called Azhan will have the longest necks on the Day of JudgmentSome scholars said took this literally to mean that their necks will be made to stretch above others as a sign of honor. Others took this figuratively and said that it means that they will be distinguished on the Day of Judgment. Regardless of which meaning is true, the fact that they will be honored on the Day of Judgment only reveals the virtue of saying the Azhan. The prophet said:When the Azhan is called, the Shaytan turn away and runs while making noiseThis shows how much the Azhan is hated by Shaytan. For that reason, many Raqis use the calling of Azhan as a method to drive away the devils. The prophet said:I know that you love herding sheep in the outskirts. Whenever you are with your flocks or in the outskirts and the prayer times enters and you call the Azhan, make sure you raise your voice. This is because I heard the prophet saying, as far as the voice of the Azhan caller reaches, every Jinn or human or anything that hears the Azhan will bear witness to it on the Day of Judgment. The prophet said:The Imam is responsible for the prayer (of those who pray behind him), and the caller of Azhan is relied upon for his honesty (of calling the Azhan on its correct time). So O Allah, guide the Imams and forgive the caller of Azhan. The prophet said:The caller of Azhan, as far as his voice reaches, forgiveness is sought for him. And ever wet and dry creation seeks forgiveness for him. And his reward is identical to the reward of everyone who prayed with him.

During the Fajr Azhan, after the caller says Hayya 'Al-as-Salah and Hayya 'Al-al-Falah, he should say two times:The Iqaamah has the same words of the Azhan with the addition of the following statement repeated twice right after “Hayya ‘Al-al-Falaah”:It is recommended for the one who hears the Azhan to repeat the same words. So when the caller of Azhan says, Allaahu Akbar, the listener should then say Allaahu Akbar softly. It is disliked for a person to be talking during the Azhan. Azhan is one of the symbols of Islam that must be honored. So, one should not only listen to the Azhan, but also repeat its words. Note that even if one is reciting the Quran, and he hears the Azhan, then it is better for him to pause the recitation and to answer the Azhan. The listener repeats the same words of the Azhan. But when the caller says, Hayya ‘Al-as-Salaah and Hayya ‘Al-al-Falaah, the listener should say:
